Casting Hope: John Carinha's Angling 4 Autism Journey

Casting Hope: John Carinha's Angling 4 Autism Journey

John Carinha, with over 40 years of fishing experience spanning from the San Juan's to Port Hardy and all along the West Coast, is the passionate founder of Angling 4 Autism, a program born out of a deeply personal journey and commitment to making a difference in the lives of individuals and families affected by autism. Inspired by his son Brandon, who was diagnosed with autism at the age of three, John sought to create opportunities for families to experience the joys of fishing in a supportive and inclusive environment.
-
The inception of Angling 4 Autism can be traced back to 2016 when Brandon was selected as the Canucks Autism Network Silver Wheaton Champion Child. A transformative fishing trip to the Westcoast Fishing Club as part of Fishing for Kids sparked John's vision to replicate the experience on a smaller scale, benefiting more families. Thus, Angling 4 Autism was born, driven by John's desire to share his love for fishing and provide respite for families in the autism community.
-
John's personal connection to autism and his advocacy for his son have been the driving forces behind Angling 4 Autism's mission. With almost two decades of experience navigating autism within his family, John understands the unique needs and challenges faced by individuals on the spectrum, making him a dedicated advocate and leader within the community.
-
Through Angling 4 Autism, John has witnessed firsthand the positive impact of fishing on individuals with autism. The program offers a therapeutic escape, combining the meditative focus of fishing with the sensory stimulation of nature, ultimately fostering joy, confidence, and family bonding. Families participating in Angling 4 Autism have described it as a transformative experience, providing a rare opportunity to disconnect from the pressures of everyday life and create lasting memories together.
-
John's commitment to inclusivity is reflected in Angling 4 Autism's approach, ensuring accessibility for individuals with varying abilities within the autism spectrum. Through tailored programs and trained staff, Angling 4 Autism strives to accommodate the specific needs of each participant, fostering a supportive and welcoming environment for all.
-
Supported by the angling community and strategic partnerships, Angling 4 Autism continues to expand its reach and impact. John envisions a future where the program grows exponentially, offering more families the opportunity to experience the joy of fishing and creating lasting memories. With ambitious goals for expansion and a steadfast dedication to the autism community, Angling 4 Autism is poised to make a lasting difference in the lives of individuals and families affected by autism.
